Need a "Pick-Me-UP"?

What is it about polka-dots? They truly make me smile! I must say that if you need a little "Pick-me-up", slip on a polka-dot something. They make it hard to feel anything but happy! Funny thing is... I own only one polka-dot shirt, but I wear polka-dots almost every day:)

A tripindicular social experiment

I've decide that language was way more fun in the 80s.  I made this realization after a recent and much needed viewing of Valley Girl.  "Like Julie, I'm totally freaking."  So I'm going to spice things up here in Wichita.  If you notice your checkout girl at Target or Dillons using phrases like "Totally Gnarly purchases Ma'am !" or "Like, Gag me, you're buying asparagus!" or perhaps, "Tubular leggings!"  it is because they have been unwittingly subjected to my social experiment.
For now, I will refrain from feathering my hair, tying sweatshirts around my shoulders, and wearing headbands across my forehead.  I think this will, fer sure, make life more interesting.

I apologize in advance to my friends and my children.

Maybe they are all WRONG

My friend, Carrie, called today to ask if the "Pain Train" was on for tomorrow more.  My answer was Absolutely, with a hint of curiosity as to why we wouldn't be working out.  The answer SNOW.  Lots and lots of snow.  Yikes!  Nathan is super excited and asked if he could play all day in the cold, cold snow.  He then proceeds to try to convince me that the cold snow is way better than the warm sun.  Who is this child and where did he come from?  They must be wrong!

I want...

something that will make my baby stop coughing, something that will make my cramps go away, something that will make me stick to my diet, something that will magically transport me to beach somewhere, something, something, something...

It really isn't too much to ask!

It runs in the family...

I commissioned my niece, Alia, to do a portrait of my boys.  This weekend my mom delivered it to me.  I will post more pictures when I get it matted and framed.  If you are interested, these make great gifts.  All you need to do is send a picture via email.

Zachary

Zachary is really annoyed that he isn't very mobile yet.  He can roll with the best of them, but he is desperate to go forward and backward.  Here's a little video.

In case you forgot...

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any
you'll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you'll head straight out of town.

It's opener there
in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

And when things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.

OH!
THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

You'll be on your way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don' t
Because, sometimes, you won't.

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.

You can get all hung up
in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You'll be left in a Lurch.

You'll come down from the Lurch
with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a Slump.

And when you're in a Slump,
you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.

You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.
Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked.
A place you could sprain both you elbow and chin!
Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?

And IF you go in, should you turn left or right...
or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite?
Or go around back and sneak in from behind?
Simple it's not, I'm afraid you will find,
for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.

You can get so confused
that you'll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place...

...for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a sting of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That's not for you!

Somehow you'll escape
all that waiting and staying.
You'll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,
once more you'll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. there are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You'll be famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don't.
Because, sometimes, they won't.

I'm afraid that some times
you'll play lonely games too.
Games you can't win
'cause you'll play against you.

All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you'll be quite a lot.

And when you're alone, there's a very good chance
you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.

But on you will go
though the weather be foul
On you will go
though your enemies prowl
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike
and I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.

You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3 / 4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!

Breakthrough

I was thinking that the original Atari game was called "Breakthrough".  I found something similar called "Pong". Anyway, yesterday started out pretty rocky, but I had a major "breakthrough" somewhere in the middle of the day.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed, holding my breath when driving past cemeteries, watching out for black cats, picking up my feet when I go over railroad tracks... I'm trying to think of all the other childhood superstitions.  Anyway, I'm optimistic!

Flax Seed

We had breakfast for dinner with a twist, green eggs and green pancakes with green syrup.  I didn't think it would be cool to make the sausage green and the berries added a little color to the plate.  To keep it all civilized, I added flax seed to the pancake batter.  It was a hit!

Kiss Us

Happy day to you!

Does anyone have any Valium???

Today was Nathan's first soccer game.  I'm pretty sure he didn't enjoy it very much.  He cried a little and was very upset that he didn't get a turn with the ball.  All the parents were very encouraging and pleasant.  As we left, Eric asked if 3 and 4 year olds were developmentally ready for team sports.  My answer is "I have no idea."  Here are a few pictures.

P.S. If you would like a much more positive retelling of today's soccer game, visit Carrie's blog- Harmony Cove.

Karaoke

"If we took a holiday.  Took some time to celebrate.  That would be so nice."
We went to the big town of Mulvane to have dinner and sing karaoke.  My friend Gwen lives for karaoke.  She and Dexter are there just about every Thursday.  Eric's shoulder was hurting so he was taking pain medicine which meant I had to drive.  But I promised I would sing something.  So I sang Madonna with Gwen and I was completely sober.  According to Eric, I sounded just as good as all the ladies that were trying to sound good.  I doubt that!  I don't think anyone sounds as good as they think they do.  I was just having fun and trying to not be embarrassed.  Soon after, Eric said he was really hurting and we needed to go home.  Gwen texted us on the way home to thank me for making her sing Womanizer all by herself.  Whoops!  I forgot that we signed up for that.  I owe her one Brittney song next time.

Rambling

I woke up this morning thinking about desire.  We are born with the emotion of need.  Babies need to be fed.  Somewhere around 4 months babies develop the emotion of desire.  This feeling makes them cry when you put them down and  motivates them to roll over.  Zachary will roll from one side of the room to the other just to get close to me.

From 5 months on, the desire becomes noticeably stronger.  Think about the root cause for misbehavior in children.  Especially toddlers and preschoolers because they have this strong feeling of desire.  Life is all about them.  They are not capable of seeing someone else's perspective.  They want that ball so badly that they are willing to get in trouble over it.

Later in life, in addition to wanting things like a new toy, straight hair, a flat tummy, thinner thighs; we start wanting to be liked or accepted.  Then puberty sets in and there is a whole new form of desire. Wanting to be wanted. There are countless love songs written about it.  It motivates us to find a mate, get married, and tangle our lives up with someone else.  I think it is substantially stronger when it evolves matters of the heart.  Just for fun here's a little poem I found.   http://www.romantic-lyrics.com/pm43.shtml

Think about addictions! What is the serenity poem?
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things
I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Wow!   I realize I'm just rambling now.

I guess what I'm thinking is that even though it is a natural feeling, it does take quite a bit of effort to keep it in check.  So be a little more patient with your infant who is crying at 2 am, your toddler who keeps grabbing toys from another child, your friend that obsesses about her weight, and yourself for whatever it is that you desperately want.

P.S. There are a few more poems, that may not appropriate for me to put on my blog.  Just google desire poems.

blood in the water

So I've decided that for some small minded people, adult life isn't any different than high school.  Life, for these people, is still about putting down others to make themselves feel better.  It is completely okay for these people to start gossip and rumors about other people's lives just for fun.  What does this mean for the rest of us???

We have to learn to be okay with ourselves, strong in our convictions, and willing to put the "sharks" in their proper places.

Hummm... I think I will spend some time on the bag today!
